Carmelo Anthony Has Season-High in Return to New York

Carmelo Anthony received a warm welcome from the Madison Square Garden crowd and was shown nothing but love throughout Wednesday’s game against the Knicks.

Anthony played with the Knicks for seven seasons and he always loved MSG. Last night he shined in New York as usual and this is what he said when he was asked if his No. 7 jersey should be retired by the Knicks.

“I don’t know,” Anthony said with a smile. “You gotta ask them.”

Then Anthony laughed and added, “I did glance up at the rafters today during the national anthem. You know, they say in life you’ve got to envision, so I was envisioning seeing Anthony hanging up there.”

Fans gave Anthony a loud ovation during his introduction and he got ‘We want Melo’ chants all night long. After the game, he talked to SNY TV about the reception he received:

“The love was definitely felt tonight. From the fans that was here, just the city as a whole, just being back. I think that feeling is hard to explain but for me to get that kind of ovation, I think I’ve always had that love from the city. To be back in this building where I spent so many years, that love felt extremely good tonight.”

Melo finished the game with a season-high 26 points on 11-for-17 (64.7 percent) from the field and 3-for-5 from 3-point range (60.0 percent). He also grabbed seven rebounds and had just one turnover but the Trail Blazers lost 117-93 and now they are just 14-21 after five straight losses.

The Trail Blazers may not be winning games right now but Anthony has proven that he still belongs in the NBA. Melo is averaging 16.2 points and 6.2 rebounds in 31.5 minutes over 20 games, becoming an asset to a team that could make the playoffs and surprise opponents.
