1978 (Horse Racing): Sent off as the 3-5 favorite, Affirmed becomes the 3rd horse in the last 6 years to win the Triple Crown after winning the 110th Belmont Stakes by a head over Alydar. Another Triple Crown winner would not come along until American Pharoah 37 years later.

1996 (NHL): One year after leaving Quebec for Colorado, the Avalanche win the Stanley Cup after beating the Florida Panthers 1-0 in triple overtime in Game 4 to complete the sweep. Colorado entered the season at +800 to win the title and entered Game 1 of the Finals as -270 favorites to win the series. Patrick Roy saved 63 shots during the game and Joe Sakic was awarded the Conn Smythe after scoring 18 goals and collecting 16 assists during the playoffs.

1997 (MLB) As a -140 road favorite, Florida Marlins ace Kevin Brown throws a no-hitter in defeating the San Francisco Giants 9-0. Brown faced just one extra batter and missed a chance at a perfect game when he barely grazes Marvin Benard on a 1-2 pitch with two outs in the 8th inning.

2012 (Tennis): Maria Sharapova completes the career Grand Slam by winning the French Open after defeating Sara Errani of Italy 6-3, 6-2. Sharapova was a -410 favorite for the match and entered the torunament with +650 odds to win the title.
