1987 (NBA): The Boston Celtics pull off an improbable 108-107 victory over the Detroit Pistons in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals after Larry Bird steals the inbounds pass and feeds a cutting Dennis Johnson for the winning layup. The Celtics failed to cover as 6-point home favorites as Bird led all scorers with 36 points. Boston would go on to win the series in 7 but lose in 6 games to the LA Lakers in The Finals.
1988 (NHL): The Edmonton Oilers win their 4th Stanley Cup over a 5-year span when they complete a sweep with a 6-3 Game 4 victory over the Boston Bruins. The Oilers entered Game 1 as -340 series favorites - the second-largest Stanley Cup Finals favorite since 1984 (Detroit was -750 vs Carolina in 2002). Wayne Gretzky had 3 goals and 10 assists in the series to earn the Conn Smythe award. The Great One would be traded during the offseason to the LA Kings for Jimmy Carson, Martin Gelinas, $15 million, and first-round picks in 1989, 1991 and 1993.
2012 (NBA): Three games from the Boston Celtics vs Philadelphia 76ers Eastern Conference Semifinals series were featured in the 2019 movie Uncut Gems and none more prominently than Game 7. Kevin Garnett played himself in the movie starring Adam Sandler. The Celtics covered the spread as 6-point favorites after winning 85-75. Garnett had 13 points and 18 rebounds in the deciding game.
