1981 (College Basketball): #1 seeds DePaul and Oregon State lose their opening games in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. These games were in the second round as both teams received a first-round bye since the field was only 48 teams in 1981.

DePaul entered the Tournament as the betting favorite at +500 to win the National Championship and were 12½ point favorites entering the game. John Smith of #9 seeded St. Joeseph's scored a layup with two seconds left to upset the Blue Demons, 49-48.

Oregon State, meanwhile, entered their game as 9½ point favorites over #8 seeded Kansas State. The Wildcats were led by guard Ronaldo Blackman as they went on an 18-6 run to close the game, including Blackman's fall away jumper with two seconds left to give Kansas State a 50-48 victory.


1991 (College Basketball): Richmond becomes the first #15 seed to advance in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament after defeating #2 Syracuse 73-69. The Spiders were a 9-point underdog and were led by guard Curtis Blair who had 18 points, 6 assists, 3 rebounds and 3 steals. Richmond would go on to lose 77-64 in the next round to #10 seed Temple.


1996 (College Basketball): #13 seed Princeton defeats #4 seed and defending champion UCLA 43-41 in the first round of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. The Tigers were a 10-point underdog for the game held in Indianapolis, IN. Princeton guard Sydney Johnson knocked down three 3-pointers and led the Tigers with 11 points. The Tigers would get blown out in the next round, 63-41, to #5 seed Mississippi State.
