1971 (NFL): In Super Bowl V, the Baltimore Colts defeat the Dallas Cowboys 16-13 to win their 2nd Super Bowl in 3 seasons. The Colts covered as a 2½-point favorite and the game stayed under the total of 36 points. Cowboys linebacker Chuck Howley was voted Super Bowl MVP after picking off 2 passes - he remains the only Super Bowl MVP winner to be on the losing team. Of the first 35 Super Bowls played, this was the only one decided by 3 points or less.

1988 (NFL): "The Fumble" - with the Cleveland Browns down 7 points to the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship, defensive back Jeremiah Castille strips running back Earnest Byner at the Broncos 3-yard line with 65 second reminaing in the game to give Denver a 38-33 victory. The Broncos covered as a 3-point home favorite and the game went over the total of 45 points. Byner had 187 yards from scrimmage and 2 touchdowns on the day but the Browns could not overcome a 21-3 haltime deficit. Broncos quarterback John Elway threw for 281 yards and 3 touchdowns.

1999 (NFL): The Atlanta Falcons reach their first Super Bowl after defeating the Minnesota Vikings 30-27 in overtime. The Falcons were a 10½-point underdog - the largest upset ever in an NFL Conference Championship game - and the game went over the total of 54½-points. The Vikings could have gone up 10 with just over 2 minutes left in the game but kicker Gary Anderson, who hadn't missed a single field goal all season, missed a 39-yard field goal. The Falcons would go on to lose 34-19 to the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXXIII.
